Wonder Struck
A novel by Makenzie Weber
It happened while I wasn't looking.I was dancing in the warm waters near my under sea home in Hawaii. Out of nowhere, I felt a hook snare my arm. I called out to Shimmer, but she was nowhere yo be seen.I felt myself being slowly pulled backwards by a stronger force than I had ever known and I started to panic. Soon I was beside the master of the ocean, a Colossal Squid. Imagine my surprise when I saw a human controlling the beast. This made no sense. A human would be a plaything for the squid yet here was a human in charge of one.
"Get on up here. Come on, don't be shy. Now, I know what you are, ad you know what I am." He had a slight Aussie accent. He was also young. About my age, approximately. "Mermaids, of all the cursed things."
"Where are you taking me, Human?"
"The name's Leone, Mermaid. We're going to my home. Atlantis." I stifled a gasp. I was going to the scientists. How...? I couldn't help it. I sneaked a glance over at his face, then fainted.

The creature fainted on me. It fell of Gitus and started to drift away. It shouldn't of mattered that it fell (there were always other mermaids) but the expression on its face was almost human. I gently guided Gitus down to it and scooped it up gently into my arms. Not an it, a she, I realized with a start. What was her name? I kept her in my arms as we started the long journey home. I would have to go slowly to keep her from dying. The cold would kill her off before any monster would if I didn't go slow. Each day was certain to be torture. I already missed the cool, crisp, refreshing waters of the Ross Sea. I took my time memorizing her features. She had a small, elfin face. Her cheekbones were prominant, her lips the color of the interior of an oyster shell. light pink from always knowing the feel of the water. Her face structure was striking, somewhere between a V and an U. I moved my gaze to her closed eye lids, which where the color of crystallized violets. Underneath lay a matching pair of dazzling emeralds, pure as the water she swam in. Her hair was somewhere between the shade of auburn and firetruck red. It was unique, just like her. Pale skin. Slender arms with artist's hands. My mind wanted my eyes to wander down to her curves, wanted my hands to remove her top. Mother of Pearl, I noted without realizing it. Should bring a pretty penny. Common sense returned to me as I reached out for it. What was I doing? Touching the thing? The abomination? It was no longer a person, it was a thing. I still couldn't help myself; I leaned down and kissed it on the lips. I regretted it right after I pulled back, but I needed to do it. She woke up a couple minutes later.
"What's your name, Mermaid?" I needed to know the name of the first girl I ever kissed.
"Ferarica. My name's Ferarica, Leone." Ferarica. Pretty, like her. She made my name sound better than the Corors. I went silent after that, and while I steered Gitus home, I only glanced at her every five minutes. Almost home, almost home. Almost time for her to be my servant.
